Yoruba and English lyricist, Jhybo is one act that has been rocking our screens and stage in Lagos to London cum Malaysia, just as he has done with a few other media houses, Jhybo’s next stop was a tweetchat with Ariori Babajide of Moremusic.ng, where he talks about his music influences, exploding career and emergence and more. Born Ajibola Toriola, he also revealed the biggest challenge he has faced as an artist.

Tell us a little about your background and how you started music?
I’m Jibola Toriola, born and raised in Lagos island..spend most of my childhood with my grandma, music also started early as a church lil boy in choir.. my desire to always express my self through sound draw me closer to music
How do you come about the name “Jhybo”?
I got the name Jhybo from Jibola which is my actual name.. since I didn’t want it to just be spelt Jibo so I added the extra alphabets to it
If you didn’t become a musician, what would you be doing right now?
If not music, I’m sure I would have been a footballer or a journalist
Aside music, any other job?
For now I’m strictly into music.. music is broad so all other business in music I’m down to it
Which song is the best you feel you’ve ever released?
My best song I’ve released is Adura Elijah, cus it’s the most simplest song i’ve recorded and the acceptance was mind blowing
What’s the inspiration behind your last hit “Para” which you featured @Soundsultan?
Para is a fire rap song.. just dedicating that to all rap fans. Cus pop sound is really tormenting rap n conscious music in Nigeria
What’s your next project?
My EP is the next project.. it’s gonna be titled
#JibolaJasper. Been working hard on it to finalize tracks.. it’s not been easy tho but we moving gradually
How do you handle your female fans?
Fans are fans.. women they say are very delicate so I treat ladies well tho.. with respect and love
How would you describe your relationship with your colleagues in the music business?
I’ve a plain minded relationship with everyone.. but you have to know the music business is so fake. Most times you never can tell for others just yourself
Songs from Nigerian artist nowadays fails to stand the test of time, where do you think the problem arise?
Well I think I wanna blame the fans n media for that. Cus they make it too easy for artist to come up with anything now n get played so far they can pay.. artist just wanna be heard and be able to pay their bills
What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous to join the industry?
They must come on board with a strong determination, belief and stay focus
Which famous musicians do you admire and learned from?
I listen to a lot of artist.. if I give u my iPad you will find a lot of different artists.. so I draw wisdom from most.. but I’m a big fan of J.cole, Lil Wayne, Big Sean , Jay Z, Common, John Legend, Chris Brown, etc
How do you think upcoming artist can survive financially without the help of a record label
Now we are in the world of anything can happen, Instagram and social media has made a lot of stars in comedy, music , dance.. so it can happen but the chances are slim.. money is the main the here mehn!!
Have you been in competitions?
Yes I’ve been in diff competitions are my early stage but I stopped it knowing most are fake with a lot of hidden agenda
Any award or accolades won?
I’ve won planty award.. 1 of it is Nea in newyork
What genre of music do you consider your work to be?
Sometimes I call my type of music “Abf” anywhere belle face.. I love hip hop but I also love to be flexible in music.. I dont want my fans to be tired of me at all
What has been your biggest challenge as an artist?
A lot of crazy things though… it’s frustrating on collabos and too many fakeness that have shadowed the business.. not easy to keep up I must tell you
Who are your major influences?
Anybody doing well in music or other areas of life.. I like to see people succeed in what they do cus that also increase my drive
What are your fondest musical memories?
Well a lot of stories but one was when I had not hit and was fresh, so Dagrin performed before me as the biggest star so my label boss then never thought me too could pull the crowd.. when I did he was rolling on the beach sand crying
Aside singing, what instruments can you play?
I love percussion so I love to always play local drums, shaker, clav etc
How do you balance your music with other obligations – mate, families?
My people are very important to me but I don’t joke with my music so they know
How often and for how long do you rehearse?
It depends.. only when I’m performing with peoples band I can say must mostly by my self and back up so does not take too long
If you could date any musician or celebrity, who would it be?
Yemi set well ehn.. but I could fall in love with kehinde Bankole
If you can have your fans remember one thing about you, what would it be?
Most crazy talented artist.. boy with the heavy thoughts and lines
Recently you where harassed by Sarz officials, are you in support of eradicating them?
If it can’t be reformed, it should be eradicated.. almost all the youth not even feeling safe in their own country.. it’s crazy that we have to be scared of that rugged looking guy with Ak47
What are your top five songs at the moment?
Para, assurance, soco, the new Cohbams song and yeba.
Which artist are you featuring on your yet to be realeased EP?
Working with some artists.. and most vocals are still coming in.. too much song to select from
Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
Yes the list is long.. but big shout out to Mum/dad , Senga, punjah and all the entire lima crew

We all fight our demons and different battles.. pls check on your loved ones steady. the rate of suicide is high now… mental health is very important .. love ❤
