5 record labels in Nigeria that are no more relevant

We have a lot of record labels in the Nigeria music industry today, however, some of this labels are no more relevant likewise their signed artist.

The competition arising daily in the industry are very stiff owing to the fact that the new arrivals already have enough money and are willing to spend it lavishly on their signed artistes so as to get the positive result.

This makes it hard for the old timers who rely on their past achievement and the respect they have gained over the years, but the truth is, money is a bigger factor and motivator.

Below is a list of record labels in Nigeria that have gone into thin air years after producing hits.

1. Trybe Records

One of the oldest commercial labels in Nigeria is Trybe Records but its very hard now to catch the industry’s attention as the competition increases everyday. On their list is artistes like 2shotz but ever since, things are no longer the same.

They tried making a comeback with the signing of  Sheyman, Eva Alordiah and Sarz but Eva Alordia left barely a month after signing the deal. Sheyman also followed the footstep likewise Sarz.

2. Question Mark Records

The home for rappers in Nigeria then was Question mark record label which was led by controversial business man, Kevin Lucciano. The label ruled the industry even before Chocolate city came through. Mode 9, Rule clean and Overdose were the label artistes.

The label owner, Kevin, was known to be ill tempered, his legal battles against his colleagues are well documented. The label became more chaos than music and eventually fell off when everyone left.

3. Coded Tunes Entertainment

Renowned music producer, ID Cabasa  happens to be a relative of Afro pop star 9ice, he formed Coded tunes and created some banging hits.

Olamide owes his success to Coded Tunes. They created the beast that he is today. But while Olamide’s career has gone to hit sky limits, ID Cabasa’s hit rock bottom with coded tunes.

4. Kennis Music Label

Arguably one of the most popular Nigerian record labels to ever exist kennis record label. They had the likes of Plantashun Boiz and the Remedies on their list. These boy bands created self dependent artistes like, 2face, Eedris Abdulkareem, Faze and Tony Tetuila.

But ever since the departure of the big names, they have been unable to replicate that form despite trying hard for more than a decade. It didn’t work with KSB, Jaywon and Goldie of blessed memory.

Now they are running out of patience with Minjin and Capital Femi. However The only hope they have for another mainstream cruise lies with bald R&B star Joe El.

5. DB Records

DB records named after DBanj, is probably the most disappointing record label compiled in this list.

They had the likes of  Kayswitch, Tonto Dike and 2 Kriss. These guys lack talent, this could owe to Dbanj’s lack of proper industry knowledge.
