2020 will go down as one of the most unforgettable year in the Nigerian music industry. Even as the Global pandemic tried slowing things down, Nigerian new wave artists have been breaking ground with the release of some amazing hit songs. The year matched the previous one in terms of the quality of music released and bettered it in recognition, global penetration and success.
We get to see new artistes emerge every year but only a few are able to sustain the fame and make it biggger. These new artistes influenced by the older generation have studied & are utmost ready to take over from them in no time.
The Moremusicng list of top artists for the first half of year puts together the best-performing acts based on impact, hit songs, feats and mainstream success.
“SidexBeats” who has been steady on the music grind, dishing out amazing songs is one of the few artist who has inspired us with his style of music.
Born in the 90’s, an era almost overdosing on afropop, reggae, afrobeat and patua goodness, with detours into fast Jack Swing, and flavored with monster songwriting and production skills of the likes of Yung L and ceeza milli , stonebowy and patoranking, Little wonder, one of the golden eras of black music, provided a real spark to a flame, and helped develop a true songwriter and producer’s ear in the young talent.
The veteran artist dished out “IGARA” early 2020 and the ripple effect of his versatility on the song has made the record an anthem.
2. Omah Lay
Omah’s musical journey started during his teenage years as a member of the rap group, Lil King. A few years later he swapped performing for producing, quickly becoming Port Harcourt’s go-to guy for a hit single, but he picked up the mic again when he realized he could use his newfound skills to advance his own career.
The singer got his big break with the release of “You” which was released on the 14th of February, 2020. After months of experimenting with sounds and building up a core fanbase, Omah Lay delivered the record-breaking debut EP “Get Layd” which houses tracks like “Bad Influence,” “Damn,” “Ye Ye Ye,” “Lo Lo” and “You“. All tracks on the EP have continued to top charts with digital stores for months and the EP is one of the most streamed projects this year.
Yungskid popularly known as Festus Bada laced his vocals on hit singles like ‘Olowo’, ‘Arewa’, and scored a major hit in his recent efforts which he titled ‘Yawa’
‘Deliberate’ was the word most used to define Yungskid this year as he fought his way to become a force to reckon with in the music industry. Interestingly, Yungskid music is a fusion of Afro-Pop – the melody of Wizkid meets the depth of the great Fela
He’s on the road to shatter our speakers with new sound in the second half of the year and that’s why can’t just ignore but highlight the young talent achievement so far.
Nigeria’s diversely talented music landscape has highlighted yet another promising star, Ikuforiji Olaitan, otherwise known as Oxlade. Listening to him for the first time leaves you stunned at his distinct musical chemistry. There’s something so silky about his sound that stuns you. It clearly tells you that this is different; something fresh.
Even after studying History and International Relations at the Lagos State University, (LASU), he didn’t let his love for music water down. In 2020, Oxlade won the hearts of many with the release of his 6 track debut EP “Oxgene,” a project filled with the best love songs released this year.
After gracing us with several hot banging songs still rocking the airways, GABRIEL OKORAFOR BOLIWATIFE, popularly known as “GABSOL” follows up sternly with “LONDON GIRL” a track produced/mixed and mastered by one of the masterminds in the music business & industry SIDEXBEATS.
Further marking his name in the industry, the prolific singer/song writer shows no sign of relenting soon as he plans dropping a new EP soon. Exceptional would surely be an understatement in terms of qualifying this magnificient talent.
